Among the myriad of wax printed patterns and fabrics, which have effectively been marketed and sold across the African continent for decades now, it is easy for anyone to get lost in what is perceived to be African fashion. There are surely a lot of misconceptions about what is meant by "African fashion". What even qualifies a style, a trend, a fashion, to legitimately be called African? “African Fashion” is for all of us to discover; it is too broad to be narrowly defined, and it does not need to be. In fact, fashion in Africa encompasses a multitude of traditions, cultures, textures, shapes, techniques and philosophies, all primarily hand-woven; so far from the confines of a single story. Its plurality, interwoven with a flawless mystery, makes it truly poetic, colorful and enchanting. This is my approach: to shape a lasting balance of color, poetry and culture; well before incorporating this industry into every design. Therefore, the African identity, which we proudly espouse, remains consistent in the continuous research, discovery, (re) design and use of local textiles. For my part, I fell in love with the iconic Kente fabric. And I haven't looked back since.
